MARC CHAGALL NATIONAL BIBLICAL MESSAGE MUSEUM

Set in the hills of Cimiez, this bright and spacious museum is surrounded by pools and gardens. It is devoted to Marc Chagall’s work, which was inspired by Jewish folklore and biblical themes.

Born in Russia in 1887, Chagall became a French citizen in 1937, he died in 1985 aged over 100. He and his wife donated his work to France in 1966-1972. His interpretations of the Bible are presented on vast canvases through the museum, over 450 of his oils, gouaches, drawings, pastels, sculptures and ceramics are on display here, along with Chagalls brilliantly decorated concert room with stained-glass windows and his tapestry.

Each summer temporary exhibits of artists are also on show here. You are allowed to take photos inside the museum and of the artwork – why not take advantage of these great photo opportunitys!

There is a small bookshop at the entrance to the museum which stock publications on Chagall and his work, they also sell prints. A little café is located outside in the garden where you can enjoy a cold drink, glass or wine or snack.
